HIKKADUWA
Hikkaduwa is a very popular beach destination just a few hours from Colombo on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Tourists can enjoy days relaxing at the beach and dining on delicious Sri Lankan and western food. Fresh fish is the specialty. Glass bottom boats offer fantastic views of coral reefs just off shore. Famous for its turtle hatchery operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka. Established in 1981 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles from extinction. The hatcheries pay fishermen for eggs that they collect at night along the long sand beach (2 km). Visitors are shown the huge tanks filled with newly born but lively hatchings. Having been fed all will be taken to the sea and released when they are 2-4 days old. They are not always released during the sager hours of darkness. All October to April is the main laying season. Some eggs can be found at Kosgoda throughout the year. This hatchery was virtually destroyed by the Tsunami. Almost all the adult turtles and approx. 3000 eggs were lost. The owner continues to run and rebuild without any state aid, relying solely on donations. BENTOTA
This sparsely populated beach is located in the Galle district, 62 Km south of Colombo. It is a well-developed town with several hotels, railway station, post office, shopping arcade and a cafeteria, surrounded by swaying palm trees. Bentota also has an open-air theatre where folk and mask dancing performances are staged regularly.
