Our decision to travel to Sri Lanka was quite spontaneous but after our visit we felt no disappointment at all. So we arrived at Colombo Airport early in the morning on 24.03.2007. Our guide met us and we started our journey. We visited the Elephant orphanage at Pinnawela en-route. PINNAWELA ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE
At this orphanage we found elephants of all ages, which were abandoned or otherwise unable to fend for themselves by way of being injured. They are looked after with loving care until they are ready to work or be freed back to the jungle. We saw how the baby elephants are fed with bottles of milk during the feeding time. The elephants are also bathed daily in a river located across the orphanage. This is an elephant photographer's Paradise. After lunch we climbed the rock fortress in Sigiriya SIGIRIYA ROCK FORTRESS
The spectacular Rock Fortress of Sigiriya, 19 kilometres North East of Dambulla is one of Sri Lanka's major attractions. Some theories affirm that Sigiriya was a Mahayana Buddhist monastery or that it was both citadel and hermitage at different times. The Citadel in Sigiriya is a fantastic display of the ancient Sri Lankan architecture. The Rock was thr Fortress of the "King Kashyapa" who murdered his father and stole the throne from his elder brother who was the rightful heir to the throne. Kashyapa built his fortress in this 182-meter high rock to protect himself from his enemies. The Nigeria rock consists of the central rock, rising 200 meters above the surrounding plain, and the two rectangular precincts on the East (90 hectares) and the West (40 hectares) surrounded by two moats and three ramparts. Today Sigiriya is famous for its "Mirror Wall", which consists of poems and paragraphs carved by visitors to the rock many years ago and for its magnificent frescoes of shapely be-jewelled maidens, vibrant colours and the water garden similar to the Ajantha frescoes of India. Sigiriya is, in fact, the best-preserved city centre in Asia from the first millenium and has been named as a UNESCO world heritage site and 8th Wonder of the World.
